In a spectacle of drums, dancers and dizzying self-congratulation, Ahmedabad – spelt Amdavad by Commonwealth Sport, presumably at the request of the Indian government – was today formally anointed host of the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The announcement arrived in Glasgow with all the subtlety of a brass band falling down a staircase, culminating in 20 Garba dancers and 30 dhol drummers storming a hotel ballroom to celebrate the unanimous vote. The real winner, of course, was not the city, nor its people, nor even the Commonwealth Games Federation, which at this point seems content to hand out hosting rights to whoever promises the biggest fireworks display. No — the man of the hour was Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whose omnipresent shadow loomed over the entire bid like the world’s largest stadium named after, well… him. Yes, the Narendra Modi Stadium — an architectural monument to modesty itself — is set to become the beating heart of the 2030 Games. The bid was pitched, unsurprisingly, as part of Modi’s long-term plan to transform India into a “developed nation by 2047,” a patriotic timeline conveniently aligned with the centenary of independence and even more conveniently aligned with his ongoing quest to solidify his legacy in concrete, steel, and very large signage.
