Ratan Tata, whose understated, ‘old money’ persona stood in stark contrast to the flashiness of the Ambanis and Adanis, died yesterday aged 86. His body was taken to Worli in Mumbai for a state funeral this afternoon, where local police formed a guard of honour. Earlier, hundreds of people gathered at the National Centre for the Performing Arts to pay their last respects to Tata, whose body was draped in the national flag for viewing. While Tata Sons’ statement did not say what caused his death, Reuters had reported yesterday that he was in critical condition in Breach Candy Hospital’s intensive care unit.
