In an unprecedented display of unity on the first day of the monsoon session in the Parliament, 145 Lok Sabha MPs and 63 Rajya Sabha MPs – cutting across party lines – have submitted a motion seeking the removal of former Delhi High Court judge Yashwant Varma, a figure long shielded by the Modi government despite allegations of misconduct. The motion, delivered to Speaker Om Birla, comes after a Supreme Court-appointed panel found substance in shocking allegations – wads of cash discovered at Varma’s official residence after a suspicious fire on March 14. For months, the government tried to deflect and protect. But now, even BJP ministers like Anurag Thakur, Ravi Shankar Prasad and Rajiv Pratap Rudy have broken ranks, joining opposition MPs including Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, NCP(SP)’s Supriya Sule, and Congress’s K C Venugopal in calling for accountability.
The motion invokes Article 124(4) of the Constitution, which requires a majority in both Houses and two-thirds of members present for a judge’s removal. With parties
