Gautam Adani is off the hook in the United States, with a federal judge agreeing to dismiss a major case filed against the influential Indian businessman last year. The judge’s decision follows the US Department of Justice declaring its unwillingness to pursue charges that Adani company officials had bribed officials in Andhra Pradesh in pursuit of a lucrative solar power deal. “My deepest gratitude to those who never lost faith in us, in the system and in India’s capacity for justice,” Adani tweeted early Tuesday morning.
Now, ‘India’s capacity for justice’ might seem like a non-sequitur given that he is speaking about a US court decision. But Gautambhai knows what he is talking about. The primary reason the DOJ cited to back up its decision to drop charges was this: Even though the alleged crime had happened in India, “India has investigated many of the allegations in this case and in several reports and decisions issued in 2026 has found no actionable misconduct.” In fact, this was a bald-faced lie. There is no evidence in the public domain that any agency tasked with probing corruption in India has ever probed the bribery allegations. And it is this ‘capacity for justice’ in Narendra Modi’s India which Adani has presumably expressed his gratitude for.
Water canons, tear gas and lathis were used today by the police against students in Ranchi protesting irregularities in government recruitment tests in an unsuccessful attempt to stop them reaching the Jharkhand assembly.
At the heart of the ongoing protest are irregularities in the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission Combined Graduate Level (CGL) examination, which was the immediate trigger bringing the students to the streets in mid-July. The students want a CBI probe but the state government – run by a coalition of the Jharkhand Mukhti Morcha with the Congress, RJD and CPI(ML) as alliance partners – claims the CGL examination was conducted under the directions and supervision of the high court and the Supreme Court of India,
