Sitaram Yechury, general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and for millions of people the most recognisable – and popular – face of the Indian Left today, died today at the age of 72 from complications arising from a prolonged chest infection. Leaders across the political spectrum have been unstinting in their appreciation of Yechury, who was personable, genuinely liked and a prominent player in Indian politics for over four decades.
