Sitaram Yechury, general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and for millions of people the most recognisable – and popular – face of the Indian Left today, died today at the age of 72 from complications arising from a prolonged chest infection. Leaders across the political spectrum have been unstinting in their appreciation of Yechury, who was personable, genuinely liked and a prominent player in Indian politics for over four decades.

Yechury’s imprint on national affairs could not be measured by how many MPs or MLAs he had with him. This is because the Left's ideas and views continue to move
