After SEBI chair Madhabi Puri Buch cited “personal exigencies” as her reason not to be present before the Public Accounts Committee today, the parliamentary standing committee adjourned its meeting. Sravasti Dasgupta reports PAC chairman and Congressman KC Venugopal as saying the committee was scheduled to take up a “suo motu review of regulatory bodies” today, in connection with which it had asked Buch to come. Although the PAC denied her request for an exemption, the regulator ultimately said she could not travel to Delhi due to the aforementioned exigencies. The PAC was expected to take up the conflict of interest allegations levelled against Buch by Hindenburg Research as well the Congress.
The committee’s BJP members have criticised Venugopal for summoning Buch to the meeting and for allegedly unilaterally deciding the meeting’s agenda.
