Police officers in Tamil Nadu today turned up at leader of opposition and DMK scion Udhayanidhi Stalin’s home in Chennai, arrested him and drove him over 300 kilometres away to Thanjavur – in connection with his remarks about chief minister Vijay and the actor Trisha that have widely been seen as sexually coloured. The police lodged an FIR against Stalin against the complaint of a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam office-bearer invoking provisions dealing with insulting the modesty of a woman, uttering obscene words in public, provoking with intent to trigger a riot and promoting enmity – the LoP had made the remarks at an event in Thanjavur yesterday. Amid the high drama, the police informed the Madras high court today that it did not intend to remand Stalin to judicial custody, and the bench directed his release.
In yet another saffronisation push, Indian hockey’s blue has been pushed aside ahead of the World Cup – apparently without even Hockey India’s Executive Board being consulted. Federation president Dilip Tirkey has sought a formal explanation on the ridiculous decision to change the national team’s jersey from blue to saffron. After the backlash, Hockey India said the blue kit blended with the blue synthetic turf used in international hockey and that players and staff had suggested alternatives, including saffron and yellow. The new jersey, it added, carries darker patterns to “celebrate India’s rich cultural heritage” and “embodies the spirit of Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat”. Tirkey has now written to board members and executive director R.K. Srivastava saying the decision was neither placed before the board nor brought to his knowledge.
