Speaking in the Lok Sabha today, Union commerce and industries minister Piyush Goyal responded to Trump's threat of 25% tariffs on Indian goods starting tomorrow, saying the government is “examining the impact of the recent events” and his ministry is huddling with exporters, industries and other stakeholders to solicit their views. But in his seven-minute-long address to the house – in Hindi only – the minister did not refer to the US president's statement early today that New Delhi and Moscow “could take their dead economies down together for all I care”.
His ministry had officially responded to Trump's 25% tariff announcement yesterday – again not invoking the president's name or his exact threat – saying it was ‘studying the implications of his statement’ and that it was still committed to the objective of reaching an agreement over their bilateral trade deal.
