Rescuers working to free 41 construction workers trapped in a collapsed tunnel in Uttarakhand on Monday brought in ‘rat miners’ to manually drill through rock, a “primitive, hazardous and controversial method used in India mostly to remove coal deposits through narrow passages”. A breakthrough was reported in the early afternoon and medical crews arrived at the site, suggesting that the rescue operation is almost over.
