Rescuers expect to drill through the last of the debris in a collapsed tunnel in Uttarakhand today to reach 41 workers trapped for 10 days. The 10 Central Trade Unions have accused the Union government of responding late to the emergency. They urged the Centre to withdraw the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code and ratify the International Labour Organization conventions concerning workers’ health and safety, says The Hindu. The Construction Workers’ Federation of India (CWFI) said in a separate statement that the tunnel disaster is the result of profit-hungry development policies promoted by “neo-liberal” BJP governments.
A minor rescue drama also occurred outside the tunnel.
The Election Commission has issued a show cause notice to Rahul Gandhi for applying the terms “panauti” and “pickpocket” to the PM. He must respond by November 25.
