After a week of political chaos brought about by her own decision to settle scores with protesting students with bullets rather than dialogue and reason, Sheikh Hasina, the elected autocrat who ruled Bangladesh for the past 15 years, finally fled her country. She arrived in India on a Bangladeshi military plane late afternoon on Monday, her exit choreographed by Army chief General Waqar-uz-zaman, on whom the mantle of forming an interim government has apparently fallen. But the army will not be able to act on its own, it seems. Dhaka Tribune reports that Md Nahid Islam – a coordinator of the Students Against Discrimination movement which spearheaded the anti-Hasina protests – has “announced that an outline for an interim government will be formulated within the next 24 hours.”
