There is a curfew and an uneasy calm in Manipur’s Jiribam after 11 suspected militants, all Kuki-Zos, were killed in a gunfight yesterday with CRPF and police personnel in the district. Two CRPF personnel were injured and one is in critical condition. Today, there are reports of three women and three children – all Meitei – having gone missing in the district. The Kuki-Zo Council is implementing a ‘total shutdown’ in the nearby hill areas today in response to the incident; it claimed yesterday that the men shot dead were village volunteers. In the Imphal Valley too, 13 Meitei organisations called for a 24 hour ‘shut down’ to demand the government secure the release of the missing six.

Sukrita Baruah cites locals as saying the suspected militants – she pegs their numbers at ten – had attacked homes and shops in Meitei areas before opening fire at the police station and the CRPF post respectively. She notes that yesterday saw the highest number of casualties in a single day in the Manipur violence since it began last year.
