When communal violence broke out in Gujarat in 2002, the Prime Minister of India made it a point to visit Ahmedabad soon after and speak publicly about what was expected of the state’s Chief Minister. But a whole year has passed since Manipur erupted in ethnic violence and the Prime Minister has yet to visit the state or even meet its Chief Minister! Now, we are told, Manipur CM N. Biren Singh will finally be in the same room as PM Narendra Modi, but only as part of a group: for the NITI Aayog meeting and then the CM’s conclave. Narendra Modi was Gujarat CM in 2002 and is India’s PM today and that explains the current prime ministerial indifference towards rajdharma.
