The Congress continues to be its own worst enemy. After an inexpicable delay in declaring its candidates for Amethi, the party’s spokesman, Jairam Ramesh, has casually informed a TV channel that Rahul Gandhi will indeed be taking on the BJP’s Smriti Irani from his former constituency in Uttar Pradesh. In 2019, he fought and lost to Irani but returned to parliament as he had also contested from Wayanad in Kerala. It is an open secret that the delay in deciding what his plans are for 2024 was seen as an expression of Gandhi’s lack of confidence in the possibility of unseating Narendra Mod and had undermined the opposition’s morale in the crucial seat. Priyanka Gandhi is expected to be the Congress’s candidate from Rae Bareily, which Sonia Gandhi has held.

If Narendra Modi crossed the Indic version of the hate Rubicon with his campaign speeches last week, the Times of India crossed its editorial equivalent today by publishing what purports to be an interview in which they gave the prime minister a platform to repeat his polarising assertions without ever fact-checking or cross-
