The Centre is yet to respond – let alone act – but the Cockroach Janta Party has announced a peaceful march from Jantar Mantar to Parliament on July 20, the first day of the Monsoon Session. The youth-led outfit says activist Sonam Wangchuk, now on the 12th day of his hunger strike amid heavy rain and down more than 7 kg, will lead the march to demand education reform and in memory of students who lost their lives due to repeated failures of India’s examination system. The CJP, which has been seeking Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation over alleged exam irregularities, has also accused Delhi Police of stopping protesters from bringing tarpaulins despite the heavy downpour. Students, parents and citizens from across the country have been requested to join the march for a transparent and credible examination system and to press for Pradhan’s resignation.

PEACEFUL MARCH TO THE PARLIAMENT, 20th JULY Thanks for all your messages to break my Hunger Strike, but that wouldn't help the 20 students who committed suicide nor will that help protect the mountains of Ladakh or the rivers of India. If you really want to help then do a little

More than a decade after signing a civil nuclear agreement, India and Australia on July 9 finalised the arrangements needed to begin Australian uranium exports. “Today, we can confirm the signing of the Administrative Arrangement to enable uranium exports to India for peaceful purposes under the 2015 Australia-India Nuclear Cooperation Agreement,” Anthony Albanese told reporters at a joint press conference with Narendra Modi. While an administrative arrangement had been concluded earlier, “it had not been possible to operationalise it because there was not agreement fully on reporting-related issues” governing safeguarded uranium transfers, Indian foreign secretary Vikram Misri told reporters.

India is among the 60 countries US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has invited to a conference in Washington next week to discuss the “resurgence of transnational far-left terrorism,” the Washington Post reports. There is no word yet on whether India will attend the event – which is seen as being driven by the Trump adminstration’s domestic political agenda rather than by any actual resurgence in the US or the world.

The jailed Indian gangster Lawrence Bishnoi ran a ‘decentralised syndicate’ from behind bars, and wanted ‘S.K.’ killed to instil fear, the US Department of Justice notes. SK is the actor Salman Khan.

Meanwhile, the Globe and Mail reports that Ottawa is refusing to comment on whether its earlier accusation against the Indian government of involvement in the Hardeep Singh Nijjar murder still stands:

“Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree’s office on Wednesday declined to say whether there has been any change to the working theory that the Indian government ordered the assassination as part of a larger campaign of transnational repression, and whether the Canadian government still believes New Delhi was ultimately behind the killing…

Simon Lafortune, press secretary to Mr. Anandasangaree, declined to discuss the investigation.

“At this stage, it would be inappropriate to speculate or comment on investigative theories while the RCMP’s work continues. The focus remains on ensuring accountability for those responsible for Nijjar’s death and supporting a thorough and independent process,” he said in a statement.

“Canadian law enforcement continues to pursue this investigation with great care and diligence, guided by evidence and the rule of law. As the RCMP has indicated, the investigation remains active and ongoing.”

The Ministry of External Affairs has confirmed that the Modi government had a fourth round of talks with the Taliban, but the militant group made no concrete commitments. The meeting was co-chaired by M Anand Prakash,
