President’s Rule was imposed in Manipur today, 652 days after the ongoing ethnic conflict there began. President Droupadi Murmu said in a gazette notification that after receiving a report from governor Ajay Bhalla she was of the view that the state government could no longer function “in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution of India”. N Biren Singh, chief minister until his resignation on Sunday, wrote on X today to say that “our land and identity are under threat” and that “illegal immigration continues to be on the rise, threatening the very fabric of our society”. He urged the authorities to deport ‘illegal immigrants’ from Manipur, whom he suggested were from Myanmar (and implicitly, of Kuki-Zo-Chin descent).
