That caste discrimination in higher education is a serious problem is apparent from anecdotal evidence about the number of deaths by suicide of students from SC/ST backgrounds and the absence of diversity amongst the faculty. The UGC (Promotion of Equity in Higher Educational Institutions) Regulations, 2012, were designed to check and reverse all manifestations of discrimination on India’s campuses but a PIL filed by the mothers of two promising students who felt compelled to end their lives
