The next census – which will include a counting of castes – will take place in two phases, one in October next year in Ladakh and the snow-prone areas of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, and the second in the rest of the country in March 2027 – meaning close to 16 years will have passed between the first phase of the last ‘decadal’ census in 2010 and the second phase of the upcoming one. The home affairs ministry announced that a notification for the intent of conducting the census may be published in the gazette on the 16th of this month.
At least ten people died amid a stampede-like situation outside the Chinnaswamy cricket stadium in Bengaluru, where fans gathered to celebrate the Royal Challengers Bengaluru's maiden IPL win yesterday and were expecting to watch the team arrive there this evening.
