US President Donald Trump made two statements on the floor of the UN General Assembly today that the Government of India regards as false and untrue:. First, that “China and India are the primary funders of the ongoing war by continuing to purchase Russian oil” and second that the “Pakistan-India” war was among seven conflicts that he personally ended in the past seven months.
Indian diplomats normally take the floor to exercise a right of reply whenever Pakistan makes false or misleading statements targeting India. We shall see later this month, as the UNGA session continues, whether it will seek to correct the record on what Trump spoke.
Today also saw the Presidents of Brazil and South Africa deliver hard-hitting speeches at the UN, confronting the Trump administration for its political interference and for the use of trade as “a weapon against a number of countries in the world.” Rather than present India’s position, Narendra Modi decided to keep off the UNGA this year.
