Unnerved by the wholly expected stock market meltdown—in which his own supporters have lost millions of dollars—United States President Donald Trump today was forced to call a 90 day unilateral cease fire in the global trade war that he launched with so much fanfare and bluster on April 2. The punitive ‘reciprocal’ tariffs are to be paused on some 75 countries – who will now be charged 10% – but not China, against whom Trump has now raised the tariff level to 125%.
Earlier on Wednesday, hostilities escalated as China announced additional levies on American goods, hitting back at the United States hours after Trump’s imposing new tariffs took effect. Stocks and bonds slumped on the moves, which heightened fears of a global recession as the European Union
