Due to its ‘direct or indirect’ import of Russian oil, the US will impose an additional tariff of 25% on India starting in three weeks from now, as per an executive order signed by President Donald Trump today, shortly after Steve Witkoff, a senior US envoy, met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, two days before the expiry of a deadline the president set for Russia to agree to peace in Ukraine or face new sanctions. “I determine that it is necessary and appropriate to impose an additional ad valorem duty on imports of articles of India, which is directly or indirectly Russian Federation oil,” Trump said in his executive order.
New Delhi has decried the extra tariff as “extremely unfortunate” and as targeting India for actions that “several other countries are also taking in their own national interest”. “We reiterate that these actions are unfair, unjustified and unreasonable. India will take all actions necessary to protect its national interests,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement, in which it also
