Indira Gandhi was convicted of electoral malpractice because a government official served as her election agent. The 1975 decision of the Allahabad High Court triggered events that led to the Emergency. But in the Undeclared Emergency of Narendra Modi, government officials and public funds are being pressed into the service of the PM’s party in the run up to the 2024 election and no court seems bothered. So uncomfortable was a UP bureaucrat with the political nature of the Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra that he decided to skip a local leg of it. The reason, he said, was:
