Only in New India can charges akin to sedition be levelled against a journalist and fact-checker for informing the public about the recidivism of a politician given to making hate speeches. Today, the Uttar Pradesh police told the Allahabad High Court that it was adding the charge of “endangering the sovereignty of India” (i.e. Section 152 of the new Bharatiya Nyay Samhita) to a malicious criminal case already filed against Mohammad Zubair of AltNews for an October 3 tweet in which he drew attention to an earlier hate speech given by Hindutva activist Yati Narsinghanand.
