Mohammed Shahabuddin, Bangladesh’s president, has dissolved parliament to make room for the formation of an interim administration, the Dhaka Tribune reports citing an official press release. Hasina’s longtime political opponent Khaleda Zia of the BNP has also been released. The student leaders want the Nobel laureate Mohammed Yunus to head the interim government and his spokesperson has confirmed that he is ready to play that role. As of now, there is no word from the Bangladeshi army chief about this crucial proposal.
India and specifically Prime Minister Narendra Modi have been Sheikh Hasina’s closest international ally which is perhaps why it took New Delhi a whole day before it was able to make a public statement about the Bangladeshi leader’s ouster in a popular uprising. The United States has revoked her visa and Britain has let it be known that they are not thrilled about her wanting to seek asylum there, which means she is likely to remain in India for the moment. This afternoon, finally, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressed parliament about the situation
